Illustrated field journals allow an exploration of science through art and inquiry. The journals of well-known biologists such as Charles Darwin and Ernest Thompson Seton were a critical part of their work as naturalists and biologists. I started my own illustrated field journal practice in 1996 and am now at work in Vol 42. Each new volume provides a meeting ground formy teaching and research, for art and science.
I provide further background in “Why do I keep a field journal” and I welcome your exploration of my journal excerpts on my blog The Viridain Life
Please also feel free to download a booklet I use in workshops for university faculty on how to used field journaling with their students (Documenting the Moment.) As a pamphlet, the pdf file should be printed off two sided, the pages assembled, and then folded in half to create a pamphlet. If you find this small guide useful to you in your work, I’d love to hear about it!
